Our Story
Welcome to The Insect Cafe. We’re Scotland's first culinary space to pioneer the use of insects in food. Our story began with our founder, Nahla, an ecologist with a lifelong love for both nature and cooking. Nahla bred insects for various research projects before she moved to work in the social justice sector. She was keen in the interconnectedness of people and ecosystems. Her curiosity led her to introduce insects into her own diet—and she was hooked!
What began as a personal experiment has grown into a buzzing culinary space with a team dedicated to sustainable, ingredient-conscious recipes. Inspired by cultures worldwide, our healthy treats are free of flour, sugar, and processed ingredients, celebrating natural flavours and nutrition.
Join us on this journey of curiosity, wellbeing and sustainability.
And welcome to The Insect Cafe - a new way to enjoy life!
Creating change
We believe global change starts at home. Through our locally farmed food and creative partnerships, we champion sustainability, empower our local communities, and celebrate both our natural and human heritages every step of the way.
Innovative Sustainability
With minimal land, water & feed, insects offer a low carbon footprint solution to food security. We blend traditional and creative recipes, to promote exciting experiences and healthier lifestyles.
Accessible nutrition
We are proud to partner with local homeless charities in Edinburgh to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need. Nutritious food should be accessible and we make it so by providing free healthy bakes to breakfast clubs.
Impactful collaborations
Climate change is a global challenge and it requires collective action. That's why we actively seek out partnerships that help us build stronger alliances. We are members of The UK Edible Insect Association UKEIA, Scottish International Development Alliance SIDA, Scottish Bakers and Scottish Communities Climate Action Network.
